$30,428 raised at 9th Annual Onward Upward Basketball Challenge (OUBC)

We wanted to say thank you to everyone who made a pledge, supported, attended, volunteered, or played in this year's tournament. The total came in at $30,428, bringing the 9 year cumulative total to over $159,479 raised for children with cancer and cancer research. Official Rules

Tournament Format:
Double elimination tournament – All teams are guaranteed to play two games

Rosters:
No limit on number of players on roster. Games are 5-on-5. At least one female per team must be on the court at all times

Game Play:
All Games (Winner's Bracket games & Loser's Bracket games) will be 20 minutes in length. Game clock will run continuously until the last minute of regulation game play. In the final minute, the clock will stop for fouls and dead balls. 2-minute overtime will be played if the game is tied at the end of regulation. The clock will run continuously until the last 30 seconds of overtime game play, where the clock will stop for fouls and dead balls. Each team will have one 30-second timeout available per game. No additional timeouts will be granted in overtime; however a team may use its timeout in overtime if it was not used during regulation. Team Fouls will be tracked. After a team commits 5 total fouls, the opposing team's fouled player will be permitted a one-and-one foul shot (player gets to attempt a second foul shot if the first one is made). All fouls will be shooting fouls after the 5- team foul limit. Should a team not have at least one female on the court at any time during game play, that team will be assessed a technical foul. The opposing team will be permitted two technical foul shots and be granted possession of the ball. Team Fouls will be carried over into overtime. In the event of a Championship Game Tie-breaker, one 10-minute game will be played to determine winner. Rules and fouls will be enforced by PIAA officiating crew.

About the Challenge

The Onward Upward Basketball Challenge was founded in January of 2003, by Penn State Alumni, Tim Chiodo, Adam Gentzel, Randy Whiteside, and Joe Worley. These gentlemen started the Challenge as a means to stay connected with their Fraternity, and the University, all while continuing to contribute to a great cause they supported during their collegiate days. In 2005, the Onward Upward Planning Committee expanded to include the services of John Mazzolla, Jess Worley, KC Gentzel, and Adam Mills. All proceeds of The Onward Upward Basketball Challenge benefit The Penn State Dance Marathon. Over the years, The Onward Upward Basketball Challenge has raised a tremendous amount of money, and awareness for Penn State Dance Marathon, which supports children with childhood cancer.

This past year, February 2011, the Challenge raised over $30,428 dollars to support Dance Marathon, bringing the 8 year cumulative total to greater than $159,479. Each year, the goal is to improve on the previous year's total. In order to do that, each team is encouraged to solicit as many donations as possible to exceed the minimum donation to participate. Raffle Prizes and recognition are awarded to the teams that raise the most money!

The tournament consists of a Full Court, 5 on 5 format, with a minimum of one female on the court at all times. PIAA officials referee the Challenge, encouraging a safe, friendly, and competitive tournament. The mission of the Onward Upward Basketball Challenge is to have fun, and raise as much money as possible for children with childhood cancer!
